In our National Park Science elective course, our students were able zoom with a National Park ranger from Bryce Canyon National Park in Utah! Ranger Alicia talked to us about the geology of the canyon. (Actually it is not a canyon, it is an amphitheater. A canyon is made by moving water, like a river. The amphitheater was made from several processes including freeze thaw weathering.) She told us how the wonderful formations came to be. She also talked to us about the emblem of the National Parks and what each element stood for. It was quite interesting to see the park and hear her talk. We also had some time at the end of the session to ask questions.

Yesterday, January 29th, the seventh grade welcomed Sgt. Major Jeremy Allnutt from the Army National Guard. He helped kick off our Literary Analysis unit we will be beginning in ELA. We will be using Ground Zero by Alan Gratz as our mentor text for this unit. The book is about 9-11 and how those attacked also impacted the lives of people around the world, specifically in Afghanistan. Sgt. Major Allnutt joined the military following the attacks on 9-11 and served a tour in Afghanistan. He talked to us about what happened on 9-11 and the lifestyle and culture in Afghanistan. Using his experience with Afghan people, he was able to give us some background knowledge of how they live, their customs and behavior expectations in Afghanistan. Students will read about those things through the eyes of the characters in Ground Zero. He helped students also have some background knowledge of the attack on the twin towers and how devastating it was not only for our country, but also for the people that were there. He shared photos and stories. He answered questions the students had. We thank him for his time and his service.

Comet community! I wanted to let you know that at our school board meeting on Monday, the JCS board unanimously elected Kayla Lewis as our new board President. In my time working with her, she has shown to be inquisitive, hard working, and an advocate for our district. We are fortunate to have her leading our board! Go Comets!!!

January is School Board recognition month. JCS would like to thank our board members for all the work they do not just on meeting nights, but also behind the scenes. There is a lot to the position that requires hours of work outside of meetings. Their task is not an easy one as they navigate the positions of so many stakeholders, but they always have the kids and staff at heart. It should also be mentioned that last night was Travis Berlin's last night serving on the board. His life has taken him in another direction and we all wish him the best. I will miss his guidance and the patience he showed as a new person to the job. He helped me tremendously. We will be sending out information on filling that vacancy soon. So if you see a board member out there, take a second and thank them for their service!

Comet families! We have more exciting news for our schools! At the school board meeting last night, we were grateful and humbled to officially acknowledge the generous donation by Judy and Rich Hale to JCS. As you know, Judy Hale was a long time teacher of JCS educating many in the community. Additionally, she has been a supporter of the schools with her time volunteering and other donations prior to this one. She states that her family comes first, but Jonesville Schools are her second love. We are grateful for their gift that will impact many different areas of our schools, including a Dustin Hale Fund to be used for plaques, trophies, certificates, etc. for the Dustin Hale Memorial Scholarship, the Dustin Hale Free Throw awards, and the Hale/Dunn Free Throw awards. Thank you Judy and Rich Hale for all you do for our kids and community! Go Comets!!!

Using our WIN (homeroom) time to work together as a team. The goal was to work together to pull the cards and get the cups to fall into the perfect stack. (It’s tougher than you think 😅) These soft skills we practice will help us as we continue through life: perseverance, trial and error, losing and winning with grace, communication skills, celebrating success and learning from failure, and of course, working together toward a common goal. These are the core of building good citizens. Here in Jonesville, we empower students for a successful tomorrow.
